TheEliteExtremophile Craven’s latest album does not stray too far from tried and true progressive rock tropes. The songs are epic, the playing is flashy, and the artwork is fantastical. There are some passages which crib from Yes and Pink Floyd to distracting degrees, but that is a relatively minor issue in the context of the whole.

Michael Reilly Ben continues to produce some of the most intriguing progressive rock you'll hear, adding new sounds and ideas to create music that will be remembered. I've enjoyed every album he's released so far, and this is another classic of great scope and style. Favorite track: Die Before You Wake.

Brian White Just once in while you come across a complete masterpiece of music.
This album is superb prog rock.
Takes a few listens to get into but once there your in. Its by far the best album he has produced. Its heavy orchestral prog and well worth having in your collection. Just where did this exceptional music extravaganza come from?

“Monsters From The Id” is the logical realization of Craven’s musical trajectory thus far. It’s an album of two halves, each containing a traditional progressive rock “epic” the length of a side of vinyl. The two pieces comprise flowing parts and movements with both rock and Hans Zimmer-esque orchestral arrangements, punctuated by Ben's distinctive lead guitar and vocals. Yet the album is predominantly instrumental.

“Lyrics are incredibly important to me,” explains Craven, “but this music was not driven by words or language. It’s pure other-worldly escapism. It’s playing dress-up, wanting to make the world look much bigger than it seems right now, trying to recall the feeling that anything is possible, no matter how unlikely that might be.”

Visually, the album cover is a treat, featuring breathtaking artwork by Freyja Dean adorning the triple gatefold CD/DVD wallet. Sonically, things are equally ambitious. A 5.1 surround mix is included on the DVD, while both stereo and surround versions are available for digital download in 24-bit 96kHz high resolution.

This is the most beautiful symphonic progressive music I have heard since I first heard Yes' Magnification nearly 20 years ago. Robert Reed's orchestrations are magnificent, and are very much on par with Trevor Rabin's film scores as well as Larry Groupe's score for Magnification. I am a french horn player, and his soaring horn parts are some of the best I have ever heard. For some reason I could not select Part1: Sacrifice as my favorite track.
